In 2016, after the Ebola epidemic in Africa, WHO completed the list of new pathogens that could cause a pandemic at any time. It is about 9 names, among them Mers, Sars, Disease X, Marburg.... What do the pathogens on the list have in common? All of these at the time were viruses about which relatively little was known and for which there were no vaccines or treatments. They all existed before, for centuries in animal reservoirs, but recently (in the last few decades) it was discovered that they can also cause disease in humans. The process of updating the list of pathogens started in 2023, the results of which should be announced soon. In the meantime, WHO published a list of priority pathogenic fungi (with global warming, mycoses are a growing threat) and another list of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that pose the greatest threat to public health today.
